About Doug Page


Doug Page is a photographer based out of the Hamilton Area and has been photographing trains since the 1950's. Doug's collection has been graciously handled by Doug's close friends and a group of volunteers pitching in to ensure the public display and preservation of his collection, not only for use in part on this site but also in other realms, including eventual donation to a suitable museum. Doug has provided his blessing on these activities and you may find him occasionally attending a Hamilton chapter UCRS meeting, of which Doug had chaired and organized for many decades. (Meetings the Fourth Friday of the month, except in summer months, at the Peoples Church, 510 Mohawk Rd in Hamilton - all are welcome - Bryce Lee now chairs these meetings) The group of volunteers who have assisted with Doug's photography include: Bryce Lee, Bruce Acheson, John Eull and Bruce Mercer.

With lots of smoke, a CP westbound throttles up, taking "a run at the hill" to Orrs Lake. The train is still occupying the Dundas Street crossing (protected by a watchman in the distant tower) and will soon cross the Grand River as the operator at the Galt station--no doubt on the platform--inspects the train. Power is Western Lines GP9 8535, SGU-equipped RS10 8559, and an unidentified FPA2 or FA2. "OS Galt..."

Under threatening skies, four passenger units (CN FPA4 6773, F9Bs 6632 and 6624, and borrowed GTW GP9 4921) move an eastbound train with a dimensional load through Milton as 1972 draws to a close.

Having originated as Pool Train No. 5 in Montreal this morning (departure from Central Station at 8:45 AM), and scheduled to arrive in Toronto at 4:35 PM, the La Salle slows for its station stop in Burlington. Scheduled to depart Toronto at 5:15 and Burlington at 5:55 PM--all going well--No. 5 should cross the border a little after 9:00 tonight and be in Chicago by 6:00 AM (Central Time) tomorrow. The GTW GP9s (4910 and 4913) took over the train at Toronto, probably having brought the International Limited in this morning.

I'm not sure of the reason for this..but on a nice clear morning in March 1972, I found CP RS3 8439 accompanied by TH&B GP7s 77, 73, and 75 at the TH&B's Chatham Street roundhouse. While RS3s where commonly used on the Goderich sub train in the mid-late 1970s, pairs of SW1200RS units were more common in the early 1970s and this would be an odd way to pick up or leave a unit at the roundhouse. Perhaps a delayed Kinnear?

Passenger units 6763 and 6871 lead a short eastbound towards Tansley in the spring of 1970. "High and Wide" loads and auto cars make up most of this short train (8 cars and the van).

Having brought the overnight train into Hamilton from Buffalo and New York City, two steam generator equipped NYC GP9s (7511 and 7508) spend the day at the TH&B's Chatham Street roundhouse. Tonight, they will take over the New York-bound passenger train from CP units at the TH&B Hunter Street station and a CP unit will take their place laying over here until the cycle repeats the next morning.

Fortunately TF2 is running late today and we can photograph TH&B 71 and 401 as they assist PC 1752, 1791 and 1773 up the grade into Vinemount in March 1972. With lots of smoke for photographers, CN 6218 heads across the Burlington Canal lift bridge on a Toronto-Niagara Falls excursion sponsored by the UCRS.(The speed on most of the Beach sub was only 15 mph!)

What is it that Monty Python used to say..."And now for something completely different". Well, you can say that again--a GO train on the Beach sub! This trip was sponsored by the Electric Railroader's Association on July 6, 1974 during the ERA's annual convention. The day started out with a TTC subway train charter then, after lunch, ran an excursion using new GO GP40-2LW 9810 and ACPU 9861 (ex ONT FP7 1512) and three single level coaches. The train ran northwest to Georgetown, down to Hamilton, over to Stoney Creek and across the Beach sub, before returning to Toronto over the Oakville sub. Here the train is shown at the Burlington Canal lift bridge at mile 4.8. (Caption information from the July-August 1974 UCRS Newsletter.)

Yes, world events can effect us here in southern Ontario. An example of this sixty years ago was Canada's massive sale of grain to the Soviet Union which caused an upswing in traffic and required CN and CP to lease locomotives from U.S. railroads. (This was described in the January 1964 UCRS Newsletter, available here: https://railwaypages.com/upper-canada-railway-society-ucrs-and-its-publications) So that explains why we have a pair of B&LE F units leading a CN train through Canfield in the spring of 1964 (Kodachrome slide processed in June 1964). The train looks like 488, one of two daily Sarnia-Fort Erie freights which was a regular through Canfield mid-day. 488 and its overnight counterpart 486 handled traffic off the GTW to U.S. railroads at Buffalo. Daytime train 484 and overnight 482 handled traffic to Niagara Falls through Hamilton. As Niagara Frontier railway connections changed in the late 1960s/1970s, this traffic was consolidated onto trains 386/387 operated via Hamilton.

A pair of C&O GP30s lead a westbound freight off NYC's Fort Erie Branch and past WX Tower in this undated shot taken sometime between 1962 (delivery of C&O's GP30s) and January 1973 (opening of the "new" Welland Canal tunnel). This appears to be either C&O 35 or 37 which handled freight from Erie Lackawanna and Buffalo Creek connections at East Buffalo to Detroit, with connections at St. Thomas for Sarnia and Sagninaw, MI as well as at Detroit for Ludington, MI and Chicago. In the 1960s, C&O ran up to five trains in each direction, most going to Niagara Falls, NY and connecting lines such as the Lehigh Valley.

Prior to the start of GO service to Georgetown in late April 1974, GO GP40-2LWs were broken in on CN freight trains. Here we have the 9808 and 9809 accompanied by CN RS18 3708 on an eastbound to Toronto Yard. GO's first seven GP40-2LWs were renumbered into the 700 series in the mid-1970s. The 9808 and 9809 were sold to CN in 1991 and assigned numbers 9668 and 9669.

There was a time in southern Ontario when you needed to call out snow plows to keep rail lines open. CP's Goderich sub was notoriously bad for "lake effect" snow and, starting in the mid-1970s, CP began to use FP7s on the line during the worst of the winter. FP7 4061, normally assigned to Western Lines provides the muscle behind plow 401006 in February 1976. CN picked up the practice a couple of years later, assigning F-units to plow duty out of Stratford.

One of CSX's last trains on the CASO makes its way west through Canfield. Not that many years ago, you could see many NYC and C&O trains here, as well as Wabash "Red Balls" on the adjacent CN line. Now CSX is down to short trains three days a week in each direction and Norfolk Southern has been running through Hamilton since the middle of last year. Things will get even quieter when the last CSX train runs on February 29th.

Three "branch line units" (8163, 8019, and 8044) lead an Extra West through Guelph Jct late in the winter of 1965. While Spring is supposed to be "just around the corner", there's still lots of snow on the ground on this bright day.

Back in 1973, CN was leasing power while awaiting its GP40-2LWs (deliveries started in March 1974) and receiving GP38-2Ws (delivered from October 1973 to January 1974--source: Canadian Trackside Guide). Here we have GO 9803 and 9804 leading an M420W (delivered earlier that year) through Hamilton on a Sunday morning. GO's GP40TCs were regularly assigned to Fort Erie or Sarnia trains on weekends in the 1970s.

In the early 1970s, you never knew what what you might see track-side. In this photo, with a processing date of May 1972, we have the eastbound Starlight passing through Burlington behind leased B&O F7A 4487 and PC GP9s 7431 and 7430. The PC units were not known for their reliability and CP must have grabbed whatever was handy to get the train over the road--in this case one of 20 B&O units based in Winnipeg (16 A units and 4 B units). According the March 1972 UCRS Newsletter, CP had 100 units on lease over the winter of 1971-72--including locomotives from the BAR, B&LE, B&M, DMIR, LS&I, Bellequip, and PNC! (However, new SD-40-2s were on the way--deliveries started in mid-February 1972.)

Having been introduced in June 1968, Tempo trains were still new and interesting when this photo was taken in the fall of 1970. Here we have a westbound Tempo--likely bound for Windsor--accelerating out of the curve at Paris Jct with a four car train behind HEP equipped RS18 3155. (Note the stock pens at the left!)

Leased power leads a westbound around the bay at Hamilton Junction on a cold but bright winter day. According to UCRS Newsletters, in January of 1973, CN had 11 geeps on lease from its GTW subsidiary and 45 GP9s from the C&O. Delivery of new 5500 series GP38-2s had commenced at the beginning of December and the GTW units will returned home in January and March 1973. Some of the C&O GP9s will stay on lease into early 1974. (For the record, power is GP9s GTW 4909, C&O 6198, and CN 4529.)
